The squigeons were actually brothers with the names Jonas, Merto, and Antti. Jonas, as the older brother, was responsible for his younger siblings. Together with his terribly busy work, also had to find food for his family. This was a very difficult task, even though the park that they lived in was large, he could not trust all crumbs that strangers threw to him, nor did he believe that the nuts from the trees were totally pesticides free. Once a week there would be organically grown food just up for grabs which was swell indeed. There were also dangers in the park... Jonas would never eat anything that he found on Sundays, because he had seen a cynical looking couple walking around feeding other pigeons, and being WAY smarter than the pigeons, Jonas observed what happened to the poor birds. Needless to say, it was not pretty.
"Brothers, do not eat on Sundays." he would say.
The second brother Merto was always running around their underground lair, making it nice and tidy. Of course he worked as well. In fact, calling Merto a workoholic would not be far from the truth. But he also loved the arts. Every other day he would go to the edge of the park by the big gray thing that had huge rolling things rumbling by each day. On the other side of the gray expanse he could see into a huge brick building where there were many brightly colored paintings. Every time Jonas brought back chestnuts, Merto would prepare them for consumption.
"How is it?" Merto would ask.
"Very nice" Jonas always replied.
"Lame, Jonas, can't you reply with something different each day? Isn't it ever better or worse than 'very nice'?" Antti would say. Indeed, Antti thought that Jonas was 'very nice' but had a relatively small vocabulary in relation to his education and social status. Jonas had taught himself to read, and was smarter by far than Antti. Antti just resented his intelectual abilities. It might also have been something about being the youngest that made Antti want to question his older brother, and rebel in other ways. Antti did not like searching for food, for example. All Antti wanted to do was listen to the music under the bench that the Huumenz with dark tattered garments and smaller rolling flat things occupied. Antti would spend the whole day under there, flapping his wings to the rhythm. This way he had also learned to uderstand the Huumans. Where Jonas had learned to read and could understand them that way, Antti understood many different ways of speaking.
One day a Huume had dropped a shiny thing on the ground. Edging closer, Antti gazed at it. Not quite understanding it, he put his paw on it and found that there was not another creature in the ground, it was solid material. In shock, Antti staggered away, and went looking for Jonas.
"Jonas, I have to talk to you, there is something I dont understand..." Antti said.
"mm"
"I saw a reflection of myself."
"mm" Jonas replied while he thought "Man, has this guy never been to the pond? fool..."
"Oh em Gee. I'm really a siili!"
"mm"
"are you listening?"
"mm... huh?"
"I shall go on a quest..."
"mm..." Jonas replied, not having fully listened to his brother. As Antti scampered/flapped off Jonas did not realize that it was the last time in a while that he would see his brother. Next time he would be different, changed in some way.
Would Jonas notice?
